SOFHA Project Activities

• In Hospitals and Clinics
  • Training health professionals in offering sound reproductive health information and services while employing the best counselling and confidentiality practices.
• In Pharmacies
  • Partnering with pharmacies which employ trained staff or are willing to be trained in dispensing accurate and safe information and products.
• In Schools and Universities
  • Establishing resources in schools for girls and young women so they can access reproductive health information and services in a safe, private and comfortable setting, without interruption of their studies.
• In the Community
  • SOFHA will be in natural gathering places as a mobile information service unit, answering questions & clearing up the myths and misconceptions that surround FP and Infertility and create a permanent presence through a HOTLINE anonymous and available to everyone.
• On Radio and TV Programes
  • A multi channel educational campaign about family planning and available services.

Experience

Before becoming an independent and national family health association, SOFHA activities were carried out by Edna Adan Maternity Hospital. The hospital provides prenatal and postnatal care including reproductive health information and services both in the maternity ward and in the outpatient department. SOFHA benefits from seven years of the hospital's experience in maternal and child health.

Expertise

SOFHA understands that expertise in health care and community advocacy is the key to making headway in establishing family planning in Somaliland and in making it a successful part of mainstream health care. We work with health professionals and community groups, expert in their fields and who employ efficient and accountable working methods.

Resources

SOFHA has access to the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital, run according to international standards, located at Hargeisa, Somaliland; SOFHA also has strong corroborative working relationships with hospitals and MCHs in Borama, Burco, Berbera and throughout the regions of Somaliland. SOFHA is firmly grounded in the health community and thus has the trust of both health professionals and the community at large. This relationship facilitates training and advocacy initiatives.
